Spring is here! If you would like soem composted material such as coffee grounds, simply ask.

Planet Perk as begun to actively compost nearly all of our trash. Our goal is to have our composting and recycling outweigh our trash by 100 pounds to 1.

Our composting includes coffee grounds, tea bags, corn starch products, compostable papers, and food waist.

Our plan is to give the majority of our composted material to the Oshkosh Gardening Club.
Downtown Oshkosh v3 - Main Street Start

Planet Perk News
Construction season. You can look at as messy, incovenient, a major pain in the arse, or you can see it as a period of renewal and rebirth for our city.

I choose the the later. Yes, it will be a scarey time for those of us who own business downtown, but nearly all of us are hopeful that all of our customers will continue to visit us while Mainstreet gets re-done. That being said, I want to take this opportuniy to promote locally owned businesses.

It seems a lot of people in our city have elected to support corporate America by shopping and eating at national chains. This is astounding given the obvious contempt that corporate America demonstrates towards the average US citizen everyday.

That may sound a little bitter I have to admit, but please consider what LOCAL businesses do for our community. We support local charities like churches, youth sports programs, the arts, seniuor programs, and civic activities. Starbucks did not sponsor any soccer teams in Oshkosh, but all of the local coffee shops did. Not to mention the baseball teams, football teams, field trips, and fairs that local cafes contributed to.

Most conservative estimates indicate that if a person spends $100 at a national chain business, less than $13 stays in Oshkosh. However, if you spend that same $100 in a locally owned business $45 or more stays in Oshkosh. In some cases nearly $92 stays in Oshkosh when you buy local. Payroll, taxes, charitable contributions, local vendor purchases and the like all stay here.

Consider Mike's Place, Delta, Two Brothers, or American Table to Perkins Restaraunt. None of the locally owned businesses get their supplies from large national distribution centers like Perkins. Mike's Place buys the meat and poultry from Winniconne and their bakery from Oshkosh. All of that local spend has a downstream effect that is positive for our community. More jobs, more money, and more taxes to be spread around Oshkosh.

The next time you have an opportunity to spend your hard earned money, think about whether you want the majority of it to go to New York, Seattle, or heaven help me, Washington D.C.

Consider spending your money in a way where it can have optimum local impact. Instead of McDonald's or Burger King, visit Mr. Cinders or Benzie's. Instead of Taco Bell, consider Durango's or Lara's. Instead of some national oil change chain, visit J&R Auto, John's Auto, or some other lcoal mechanic. Instead of Menards or Lowes, spend your money at Kitz & Pfiel, Nofke's, or Oshkosh Lumber.

The more you support us, the better your own economic situation will get.

By the way, there is no such thing as a localy owned Starbucks. All of them are owned by the parent coporation in Seatle. There is only one Planet Perk, one New Moon, and one Pilora's. All three of these cafes are owned by people that LIVE in Oshkosh, have children in Oshkosh public schools, attend services at local churches, and volunteer at local charities.

If you would like to know what Planet Perk is doing for our community, talk to me anytime. I think you will be impressed and have an entirely different view of us and we are only one business. Next time you are on the soccer pitch, baseball diamond or attend a charity event pay special attention to the sponsors and think about those business do to enrich our community.

So, do you want $13 or $45 plus?
