Health and Fitness v3 - Busted!
10/25/10
By Ken Osmond
Planet Perk News
I am busted! It has been 8 months since I made an entry here. Yes, my weight, energy, and fitness levels have fluctuated like the SP500.

Like a lot of people I had lofty goals and failed to reach them. I might as well have set my sights on becoming a premiere ballarina. No more. I have decided to make incremental changes to the way I live starting today. Stuff that I can do as part of a simple set of healthy choices.

This ain't easy either. I love the chili dogs and ice cream at Caramel Crisp, I crave root beer from Ardy and Ed's, and Fat Mama's just has my number cold! Like Popeye syas, "I am what I am." So instead of giving this stuff up completely I have decided to ration my excesses in these areas.

Here are some other minor changes that I have made:

1. No Diet Soda - Many experts believe that the artificial sweeteners actual do not fool your body at all. Essentially, you might was well go for the gold and drink the real stuff. So instead, I am drinking tea or carbonated water when I can. Once in a while I will indulge myself with a real soda, but limit it to a 7 oz bottle. No more 20 oz anything and certainly no Kwik Trip bladder buster size drinks.
2. Reduce the Carbs - Ouch. I love bread the way race cars love STP. However, most of what I have read tels me that men above a certain age (none of your darn business) will essentially grow big in the middle from carbs. It just rests there like a cat in fron of a sunlit window. I am not giving up carbs completely though. I am simply choosing to limit them and to seek out complex carbs instead when I do eat them.
3. No Fast Food - This stuff is just plain bad for all of us. It tastes great, but I need to drop this junk if I plan on giving my daughter away at her wedding.

I will post updates on the impact of these choices to my weight, energy, and health as I go. I will also post other incremental changes as I make them. I just learned that I cannot drink from the firehose and do everything at once.
Great Taste Corner v3 - Smore Brownies
10/25/10
By Ken Osmond
Planet Perk News
This is cheating, but hey - who has got time during the silly season?

If you want a taste of summer during the winter, try making these with your kids. All you need is the following:

- 1 Package of Brownie Mix. Bake following the instructions
- 1 jar puff marshmellow spread. Spread on brownies to your taste.
- Golden grahams Cereal. Sprinkle Golden Grahams on top of the marshmellow spread.
- Chcolotate Chips. Sprinkle choc chips on brownies. Use milk chocolate if you can.

BAM! A Smores Brownie. Its simple, the kids can help and it is gloriously decadent.
Environment v4 - Holiday Activism
10/25/10
By Ken Osmond
Planet Perk News
As we gear up for the holiday season (October 31 thru January 1) there are some opportunities to reduce your impact to the environment if you are so inclined. No, I am not preaching or trying to make you feel guilty. Hopefully I am offering suggestions that also help you save money.

1. Shop Local - It cost less in gas money to shop in Oshkosh than it does to go to Appleton any place else outside of our great city. Contrary to popular belief, there are some great shops in our downtown that are localy owned and provide great deals. Apple Blossom Books, Karniby's, Soire, and tons more. It Kitz & Pfiel does'nt have it I probably don't need it anyway.
2. Plan Shopping Trips Carefully - Limit the number of trips you need to take by searching for what you want online, find a store close by that has it or call to the same first. Also, shop early. The more you can shop early in the season and reduce traffic congestion, the less gas you waist and the more sanity you will save.
3. Consider Fewer Lights - This is a hard one. I LOVE christmas lights. They give me warm fuzzys just like anyone else, but after watching my electric meter spin like a politician's mouth piece I have to say no to the outdoor lights.
4. Reduce, Re-use, Recycle Wrapping Supplies - Save your bows and ribbons, recycle your paper or save the paper from larger packages for smaller packages next year. In the extreme, you don't have to wrap at all. My wife and I never wrapped presents that came from Santa. Afterall, in every Santa Claus special I ever saw very few presents were wrapped anyway.
5. The Seinfeld Proxy - I don't recommend this since it is just plain cheezy, but some people have taken this route with me and you cheapskates know who you are! Simply re-gift.
6. Give Away What You Don't Need or Use to Someone Who Does/Can - Collect your coats and boots now for the donation box. It was hard to give up my 1980's parachute pants, but those are going to the Salvation Army - sniff, sniff. My wife and I also encourage our kids to gather the toys they have outgrown so that they can be donated to shelters and such. It is good for the community and it is a great way for your kids to warm your heart as well. By the way, this a tricky way to get the kids to clean their rooms and the basement - a major twofur!
Downtown Oshkosh v4 - Main Street Finish
10/25/10
By Ken Osmond
Planet Perk News
OMG, Main Street is almost done!

Well, it was a bit painful at times, but the hard work of the city, Oshkosh Chamber, the Downtown Bid District and local business people will pay off for years to come.

I have to give mad props to the business owners actually on Main Street itself. These folks really took a bullet for the city. This was a long overdue project that will improve the lives of every Oshkosh resident and the visitors to our fair city.

Rock on OSHKOSH!
